Lead “crypto fighter” leaves the US Department of Justice’s strategy department

Beth Williams leaves the Department of Justice’s strategy department, but it remains unclear what position she will take on next.

Acting Assistant Attorney General Beth Williams will be stepping down from the strategy department, according to an official announcement by the US Department of Justice on December 11th

Since 2017, Williams has been a key figure in the Office of Legal Policy. In the latest announcement, the Department of Justice only confirms that Williams is leaving the strategy department without making it clear whether she is also leaving the Justice Department or which post she will take on next.

In the corresponding message, the „DoJ“ reminds you of the projects Williams participated in during her term of office:

„On the cyber strategy of the Ministry of Justice, where she designed a strategy for cryptocurrencies as part of a cyber-digital task force.“

Thus the Ministry to notice applies from October, when there is a legal framework for the prosecution of crypto currencies published had. Williams had said then:

„This framework reflects the extensive cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and national and international authorities in the joint fight against the unlawful use of Crypto Method, which benefits the legitimate users of this asset class and the general public.“

The Justice Department’s legal framework appears to be another attempt by the outgoing US administration to influence future crypto regulation before the change of government. The US Treasury is currently even more in the focus of the crypto community, as it has drafted a controversial „ban“ on crypto wallets that could cause great damage in the industry.
